Find time to revolutionize your mind - As Seen in BLAC magazine

Find time to revolutionize your mind

Fitness coach Angie Johnson shares how to "be your best you"

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; none but ourselves can free our minds” are the lyrics from the last single released by Bob Marley before he died in 1981. It’s said to be the most influential recording in Jamaican music history.
I personally vibe with this song because it talks about liberating your mind. There is a divine or spiritual connection between our bodies and our thought life.
If you want to change your life, change your mind.
I used to be in bondage to so many negative emotions that weighed me down. Literally. I was never really obese, but I was overweight. And because I was overweight, my energy was depleted and my attitude was so negative I scared off positive energy like Raid chasing away bugs.
We’ve all been there. It’s 8 p.m. on a Friday. The work week is over and you’re trying to decide between pouring yourself a glass of wine, falling comatose in front of the TV or to crawling into bed and vegetating. The last thing that sounds appealing is heading to the gym.
That was me years ago before I “revolutionized” my mind. It’s a philosophy I live by now: RYM (revolutionize your mind).

I had an epiphany. Instead of being overweight, tired, negative and depressed, I realized I was responsible for my own life, my own thoughts and my own health. The premise is simple enough, but the power is profound when carried out. That’s when I made a decision to start a revolution.
It sparked a major turnaround in my life and birthed a health fitness facility I’ve run in Farmington Hills for the last three years.
My husband, who’s my partner in the business, was always in shape. He loves to work out and exercise and inspires others to do the same. I couldn’t figure out why I was gaining weight and feeling sluggish and he was not. I saw it was his attitude. Though we basically were dealing with the same circumstances and issues, he chose to be positive and I chose the opposite.
Though I knew what exercises to do and foods to eat, I had to revolt against the thoughts that stopped me from doing the right things.
That Marley song that urges us to “emancipate yourself from mental slavery”—because “none but ourselves can free our minds”—is the reason we push the RYM philosophy.
I’m now a certified fitness coach, licensed Zumba instructor, lifestyle coach, fitness contributor and expert for Fox 2’s Get Fit segment and to several wellness blogs.
Our gym is different because I know what it’s like to know the right things to do—but can’t get motivated to do them. I take time to get to know our regular members and those who drop in for our classes. We host regular RYM philosophy seminars for free. And I make an effort to help people change the mind’s outlook on diet and training.
It’s more than working out. It’s more than just cardio and reps.
It’s about a healthy lifestyle beginning with an internal torch that sparks everything else.
I try to make the space a family environment where everyone feels “at home.” All my instructors know all of the members by name, friendships are formed and it’s not unusual for members to receive “check in” calls from us. Our classes are small enough for a personalized training feel without the big price tag typically attached to one-on-one sessions.
I meet people where they’re at and I take into consideration what’s going on in their lives. I am thankful that God has shown me my purpose in life—to serve people with love and compassion. I love what I do and whom I do it for.
People tell me that coming to my facility is energizing. That is our goal. If you feel good about coming and empowered to be your best you, I know we’re doing something right.
